There are flights to Crete via Athens from Europe, the USA or other countries
Direct charter flights to Crete from EU countries
Direct flights to Crete from other countries
Domestic flights to Chania
Within Greece all flights are a short hop, so you might think there would be little to choose between airlines. Purely on grounds of quality and service our favourite is Aegean Airlines, which ranks in our experience, with the best of European airline companies.
Aegean have a code-sharing agreement with Lufthansa - connections with Lufthansa hubs and gateway airports bring some of Europe "closer" to Athens, Thessaloniki and all Greek airports served by Aegean.
Aegean Airlines has merged with Olympic Air. The merger took place October 2013 as EU made a decision.
A superb way of enjoying the journey to Crete is to fly to Athens and take the ferry from Piraeus (Pireas) - the port serving Athens. The new Athens airport makes this a slightly slower process because it is further from the port, but it's worth the extra time for a still-romantic way to travel. A trip to Greece has long been associated with the idea of approaching the island of Crete (Chania), early in the morning, standing on the deck of one of those famous ferries - an enthralling and gentle way to arrive at destination.
These overnight ANEK Lines "Elyros" & "Lato" overnight ferries take 8-9 hours. During summer there are daytime trips. Departure at 9 am from Pireus and Souda port.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The ferries sail when the weather is considered suitable and stable conditions are predicted. If the weather is bad, sailings will be cancelled (not often - but there are a few such days every year), and you should be accommodated on the next available sailing.
